Between 1912 and 1937, they developed a matching grant program, starting with the construction of six schools in Alabama. They sparked an initiative that facilitated the construction of more than 5,000 schools, vocational shops, and teachers’ homes across 15 states.
Virginia’s constitution of 1869 created a universal but segregated public school system. During Reconstruction, former slaves pursued universal education, establishing hundreds of schools throughout the South.
